Fleas are small parasites of dark color that feed on the blood and tissues of both birds and mammals. Fleas are not only irritating to pets but can also transmit parasites and diseases. You should take all precautions to protect your yard, home, and animals from these pests. Although there are many options for flea control and prevention, homemade sprays can prove to be more effective than commercial ones. Here are some home remedies you can use indoors and outdoors with simple or common ingredients.
Lemon Infusion Spray
Lemon is an effective natural flea repellant and can be safely used on almost all fabrics. Bring two cups of water to a boil. Add two thinly sliced lemons. Leave the rinds alone. Allow the mixture to simmer for 30 minutes. Remove the mixture from heat and allow it to sit overnight. Strain the liquid into an airtight container and add a little vinegar. Mix the homemade flea treatment in a shaker before using. Spray your pet's bedding, furniture, and carpets with a fine mist. Make sure to test an inconspicuous area first to make sure they are colorfast.
Salt
For carpets, finely ground table salt or sea salt can be applied to kill fleas and eggs. However, high-humidity environments should be avoided as salt clumps and adheres. To achieve the best results, apply a thin coating of salt to the infected area. Then, gently rub it into the fibers. It can be left on the carpet overnight, with limited traffic. Vacuum after 24 hours.
Nematodes
Beneficial nematodes are microscopic, harmless worms that do not pose any harm to pets, humans, plants, and the surrounding environment. They feed on the larvae from fleas, termites, and other harmful pests. You can buy them at your local home improvement store or nursery. Mix the water with the instructions and spray in shaded areas to control fleas.
Diatomaceous Earth
To treat flea infestations at your property and home, diatomaceous Earth can be used as an agent drying. It is safe to use food-grade products that are non-toxic for humans and pets. But be careful to protect your eyes and skin from the fine powder, which can cause irritation when it is airborne. Because moisture makes this product ineffective, it is best to use this product only in dry areas.
Cedar
Cedar is also a natural repellent to fleas, making it a great homemade flea treatment for yard applications. Cedar chips should be spread around the yard and in areas you have seen fleas.
Plants
Many plants contain oils, compounds, and odors that are repelling to fleas. Strategically placing these plants around your property can reduce or eliminate the flea population. The following plants are on our list:
Fleas and other insect-repelling plants, flowers, and herbs can be placed around windows and patios. You can also control fleas by cutting back on weeds.
